Wild Woman Series.

The Wild Woman Series explores the feminine wild spirit through strikingly surreal imagery that embody dream-like, mythical worlds that I have created.

The body of work began as a series of sketches I developed during a recent period in my life when I was undergoing difficulties not only with autoimmune diseases and Endometriosis, but my mental health. The drawings allowed me to work through my anxiety, depression and other conflicting emotions as a form of art therapy. There are a few outliers in the images, which indicate extreme moments in time when emotions were at their peak height.

The culmination of these studies was the final work ‘Lost Souls’, which is the full colour artwork shown below. The work is a deep reflection of the my growth from the ground up. Common motifs include water and sea creatures, which I associate with calm, recovery and safety. Even in moments of severe pain, trauma or confusion the work indicates there is hope in the rebuilding of the bones and mythical beings that exist in the starry night sky.

Following on from ‘Lost Souls’, I began expanding the series using textiles as a medium, depicted left. ‘Wild Vibrations’ explores the themes of women going back to their wild nature before expectations, limitations and labels were placed on our roles in society. The artwork is a large tapestry, which suggests “women’s work” in regards to textiles, sewing and related industries. However, the work is not the typical or expected sewn piece that a woman “should” make. It is a direct reconnection with our wild nature that goes so far as to morph the female sense of self into her own being.

The Wild Woman series is knowing that despite hardships, life’s detours or obstacles that are thrown from all directions there is the ability to start again. All is not lost and one can be found again. It takes time, healing, self-love, a gentle hand and knowing it is okay to leave in order to recover before returning once more. It is a rebuilding of self to become the woman we want to be without the imposition of societies, others close to us or most importantly our own expectations. Wild Woman is a discovery of self-acceptance, learning to trust yourself again in order to love, live and breath again.
